Hello
We should escape the land and enjoy spending time in the ocean. Don’t you wish you were here?
The scuttlefish is a project by Brian Lam, Chris Dixon and friends, celebrating the lovely, terrifying, powerful, mysterious, soothing, angry, calm, merciless, and awe inspiring sea. It has nothing much to do about technology. Except when it is a submarine.
The Scuttlefish is designed to evoke the kind of vibe you’d feel after a nice long day at the beach. Or a difficult night at sea. It’s not about animals, or sports or eco, or science, or travel or food or culture, but all of those things and perhaps a bit of lore. Because besides our own human drama, there’s no deeper well of stories, and no more mysterious and rich a frontier than the ocean. Basically, our job is to fit as much of the wonder of the seven seas onto our pages as humanly possible – through word, image and video.
The Scuttlefish is a partner site of The Atlantic and originally reported stories appear on TheAtlantic.com at times.
Send us links and stories or just say hello at b l a m at thescuttlefish.com, or c dixon at thescuttlefish.com.

Hey Brian,
I’m a regular Visitor to The Scuttlefish and while on this page thought I’d say Hi!
Wanted to let you know that this is one of my favourite Blog Sites to visit.
Thanks for the time & effort you put in… I always enjoy visiting.
Cheers,

Aloha Blam! Nice blog! Yes, as you know we love the ocean, too! Aiko stepped foot in the ocean before she ever stepped into a pool! Of course the ocean was here in Honolulu at the age of 8 months old! Continue your beautiful journey with the ocean!
hey blam,
i was actually at the ocean on sunday and thought of you. the swell was ridiculous… im sure you saw it though.
there were waves a mile or two off shore that must have been about the size of barges, because all the observers on the beach could see them swelling and crashing even at that distance. it was a powerful moment.
the ocean is a powerful force… even being its presence can move you.
anyways, thanks for putting this together. its really nice.
laura
hey laura stirling. what beach were you at? OB? feels like we should get a drink soon before I go away to ny for a week.
Humans who love the ocean need contact with others who do the same.

Great find on the list of sites to visit. I’m a native San Franciscan so can relate to many of the articles here about the Pacific Ocean. Have a look at our site and we’d love to have you blog about your travels there too!

Hello!
I’ve been in New York/Brooklyn for the past 11 years, but grew up in Capitola, CA. I tried living in a landlocked place for a short time, but it wasn’t for me.
Love this site.
I really love your blog, you seem like a team of very interesting and artistic individuals. I’m conflicted though with the number of posts on the topic of food. I would assume a group of people so concerned about the ocean would also be concerned about conserving it, not taking living things from it to satisfy a small taste desire, as fishing is one of the main causes of our oceans destruction.
Love your site, Brian–get those gills wet!
A friend pointed me to this blog and it is my absolute favorite. I live on the east end of long island and everything I do revolves around my ocean backyard. Im a surfer and an artist, and I started a blog that documents all the things I find on my beachcombing adventures, these things then work theyre way into my art as a form of collage. Keep up the awesome work!
I know and like your blog, too, dude. I’ll look you up when i’m in ny if you do the same for me when you’re out west.
Hey Brian,
I’m back in Italy. I’m gonna read your blog sometimes; very interesting indeed!
All my best!
After reading a number of your stories on BitterEnd, I thought I might check you out. Nice blog and a good collection of books on offer.
Hi! It was nice to happen upon your blogsite. I’m studying to be a marine biologist, and have a deep love for all things microbial. I wish that I had something to contribute, but school is a lot of work and time. Good luck!
Hi Brian. Have you got a chance to try out that short and fat hand plane from brownfish. I’m hoping to see your opinion and comparison to the others before buying. Thanks
Loved this tattoo post. Now I have to see all your other stuff. Cant wait.
Thanks
Brownfish sent me here. Thankfully. Happy to be late to the party–that means a wealth of past postings at this artfully edited chest of sea shanties.
Hey Scott! Thanks for the note.
Hi! I came across your site when looking up info on handplanes! Do you have any recommendations for beginners? I live near Linda Mar beach and I went out there today with fins and a foam swimming kickboard! Have you tried the Finis Alignment kickboard yet? It is $16 on Amazon and I was thinking of ordering.
Your site is awesome!
