Impressive, and while it is more than a little disappointing that for an event titled “SAIL,” there doesn’t appear to have been one single sail hung, it’s not difficult to imagine why.
The Port Authority of Amsterdam issued “extra nautical safety measures” like compulsory one-way traffic, a zero tolerance on alcohol if you were behind the helm (which I’m sure was strictly followed and vehemently enforced…), and speed limits during the opening and closing parades, among other safety measures which it detailed in a press release.
After something like 5,000 boats weaving their way through the port, you can’t help but wonder how many hull repairs are on the docket for the port’s shipyards in the coming weeks. –OJB
