On July 1, 2015 PBS will debut their new series ‘Operation Wild’ – a show that follows vet teams around the world as they undertake groundbreaking operations to try and save animals’ lives. The debut episode includes coverage of the first successful breeding program for manta rays in the world — at the Churaumi Aquarium  on Okinawa Island, Japan. Manta rays, the gentle-giants of the sea, are critically endangered and the episode follows the development of an underwater ultrasound to help track the health and progress of fetal manta rays.

One of the goals of Operation Wild is to highlight how we can use advances in human medicine to transform the way we can look after animals in some of the most remote places on earth. The concept behind this One Health Initiative is to link human health to animal and environmental health on many different levels. From practice of technologies and invention to shared insight on diseases and cures.

Stay tuned to future episodes on other ocean animals such as a Cape fur seal suffering from a mystery illness and the treatment of a dolphin who lost her tail to a bacterial infection that nearly killed her.

Bonus for Episode 1 – baby pandas! Everyone’s favorite mini-creature. Enjoy! -CS
