Meanwhile at Malibu…

A few days ago, the same late spring south swell that pummeled Latin America over the past couple of weeks struck Malibu in Southern California. (See footage of professional surfer Mark Healey catching what might be the biggest beach break wave ever surfed.)

Now, Malibu might not be the biggest or fiercest wave, and certainly pales in comparison to what we saw from Mexico over the past two weeks, but man, oh man, if you’ve ever surfed here, surely you know it can be just as dangerous.

The waves may be a small fraction of the 25-30-foot faces Puerto Escondido saw, but half of Southern California on one four-foot wave can produce just as much terror:
