Waves of Grain: How Animating Sawdust Creates Swells in Wood

Artist Keith Skretch painstakingly photographed a plank of wood while planing it down, snapping a shot after each pass of the planer, millimeter by millimeter. Taking note of the “seemingly static grain of the wood,” he strung the photos together to make this strata-cut animation, which looks like ocean waves wrapping their way around points and peeling over reefs.
