Video: This Is How Lighthouse Keepers Used to Change Shift on the Iroise Sea in France

This excerpt from the documentary Il Était un Phare (It Was a Lighthouse) by Thierry Marchadier shows how lighthouse keepers changed shifts on the Iroise Sea off the coast of France. Kéréon Light, featured in the video, was built in 1914 and operated this way until 2004, when it became automated.

Many seem to lament the change, but as exciting as it must have been to experience being hoisted over one of the most dangerous seas in Europe, it’s probably for the better. If you were dropped and the waves didn’t get you, the rock pile below surely would.
