A (Nearly) Featherlight Sailboat You Can Throw Over Your Shoulder
by Owen James Burke
Kayaks, canoes, and rowing shells have all been made lightweight enough to carry, but sailboats? Hardly at all, apart from child-sized Optis and bathtub-shaped dinghies, but the RS Aero could be the adult’s answer the Opti.
The hull design of this boat takes on a very wide base, a shallow draft and a neutral center of buoyancy, which work to offset its forward-stepped mast and allow it to plane without too much displacement. These little boats are sleek, light and fast, and should be perfect for urban sailors who don’t want to deal with the hassle of trailering or paying marina storage fees.
