Wish You Were Here: Spearfishing Wahoo and Dodging Sharks off Texas Oil Rigs
by Owen James Burke
Spearfishing big game around oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico has become popular with the more adventuresome, sporty crowd, and it’s easy to see why. Make no mistake though; this is not for the faint of heart.
The divers have to submerge below and ahead of the wahoo and, wearing camouflage, hide beneath them for a few moments until they’re presented with an opportunity. In the meantime, their holding their breaths in so as to not let a single bubble of air out. That would spook any fish and ruin the chance of a shot.
Then there are the sharks, which I wouldn’t mind, if I weren’t tethered to a bleeding and convulsing wahoo. If you’d like to give a try, or just take a tour, give Texas Bluewater Safaris a call.
