Wish You Lived Here: Mossel Bay, South Africa

by Owen James Burke

Fishing, surfing, diving and whale-watching are all available from the doorstep of this oceanfront property in Mossel Bay, South Africa.

The two surfing spots in front, Inner and Outer Pool, are both visible from the wraparound deck, and the world-famous J-Bay is within striking distance. There are also several tidal pools to wade through, Stone Age caves to explore, cliffs to hike and golf courses, casinos and pubs in which to while away your time and money when the sun and salt start to get to you (I hate when that happens).

Who needs wall-to-wall television screens with this view?

Mossel Bay sits in between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, and may just also have the best climate in the world. Temperate and dry with temperatures ranging between 19 and 26 degrees celsius (66-79 degrees fahrenheit), this open-air living room and fireplace is the place to be for the better part of the year.

Simple but spacial, this house sits right on the beach, and the downstairs unit (complete with separate bedroom and bath) includes a wet room for diving and surfing gear.

View from the bedroom

For just $1.3 million, this could be the first thing you see every morning. Not bad, compared to some of the cramped New York City apartments selling with the same price tag.
