This Strange Creature Was Discovered on a South African Beach

But sadly, the woman who found it and posted this picture on Facebook left it behind, so scientists will never truly know what it was.

It does seem to resemble a rocksucker (Chorisochismus dentex), but what’s that bivalve doing clamped to its tail, and what’s been eating its scales and fins? Rocksuckers do eat bivalves, but a bivalve eating a fish is unheard of. Perhaps it (mistakenly?) clammed up sensing a predator was near and (mistakenly?) got a hold of the fish. I suppose we’ll never know…
