These Are Some of the Most Pristine Waters on Earth

Comprised of San Felix and San Ambrosio, the Desventuradas lie 570 miles off the coast of Chile. In February of 2013, National Geographic sent a team of scientists to take a dive and have a look, and what they found was a vivid display of ocean life so extraordinary that they made 280 dives, took over 12,000 photos, and shot more than 80 hours of video footage.

Among their findings were 5 Juan Fernandez fur seals which were thought to be extinct 100 years ago, heaps of giant lobsters almost 15-pounds each, and at least 10 other species that appear to be entirely new to science.
