A Tale of Two Atolls in the Mozambique Channel

by Owen James Burke

Europa and Bassas da India are two unique atolls between Mozambique and Madagascar which give us insight into how fertile the rest of the Indian Ocean once was, and can be again.

If there were ever a place to spot sea turtles, it would be Europa, and if you want to swim with hoards large sharks or completely unspoiled mangroves, Bassas da India is your place.

National geographic photographer and marine biologist Thomas Peschak has spent his career looking for just such places, and upon his findings in Europa and Bassas da India, has dubbed them the “holy grail” of marine life.

That may be true, but one thing’s certain: it’s just made our bucket list.
