Little Barrier Island, Home of The Giant Weta Bug

by brian lam

That is Little Barrier Island, in New Zealand.

This is the Weta Bug.

The largest on record, making short work of a large carrot. Former US park ranger Mark Moffett went looking for the endangered species and after two days on Little Barrier Island, the only place they live, he found one. A large Female Weta can weigh 70 grams, or as much as three mice. There used to be bigger ones but rats, introduced to the island by human visitation, ate them.
