Cortez may be the last of a long tradition of fishing villages in Florida, and Thomas “Blue” R. Fulford, 87, who has fished all but 13 years of his life there. Blue, who grew up eating mullet, “the bread and butter fish of Cortez,” for breakfast, lunch and dinner, may be the last of the village’s traditional fishermen.

Blue no longer fishes, though we’ve no doubt that he could continue if he liked. Still, he’s keeping the village tradition alive by assembling cast nets for the few remaining fishermen in the community.
