A Diver Dwarfed By A 45-Foot Right Whale

by Owen James Burke

During a 3-week photography expedition to the subantarctic islands of Auckland, ocean photographer Brian Skerry and his assistant were alone at the bottom of the seafloor when they were “gently approached” by this massive and curious Right whale. Slowly drawing closer and closer, the 45-foot whale eventually settled right next to Brian’s assistant, allowing Brian to snap these staggering images.

“You’re at the bottom of the ocean alone and you’ve got this thing that looks like a submarine swimming up to you, but it’s looking at you and it’s thinking and you see its tail moving…I’ve had some magnificent animal encounters out there in the wild, but I have to say this one tops the list.”
